Staying true to our history of hosting noteworthy guests, Gerber/Hart Library has slated Rita Mae Brown as the keynote speaker for our 2008 Annual Benefit, Making History: Telling HerStory. The event will be held on Saturday, September 6th at 7:00 pm at the Swedish American Museum Center. Ms. Brown is one of the most revered and respected lesbian writers in the country. The author of over 35 novels, three poetry collections, three screenplays, five television series, seven television films, and numerous impassioned essays, Ms. Brown is an intellectual force to be reckoned with. An activist extraordinaire in the early days of the civil rights, women's, and lesbian/gay liberation movements, Ms. Brown co-founded organizations including New York University's Student Homophile League and the lesbian-feminist collective The Furies. Her activism and writing coalesced in the publication of her first novel, Rubyfruit Jungle, in 1973. We'll celebrate the 35th anniversary of the publication of this semiautobiographical lesbian picaresque tale at the benefit.
The Honorary Chair of the event is William B. Kelley. Kelley is a noted Chicago activist and is a member of the initial group of inductees into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in 1991. This is an opportunity not to be missed!
